Located in Pozuelo de Alarcon in Madrid, Spain, this futuristic home design features a facade of curved walls of stone dark granite and marble travertine, providing privacy as well as a dramatic welcome. A water feature flows from outside to the entry, creating a seamless transition to the interior environment. The house is situated on a slope, inclined toward a lake, allowing for an upper and a lower terrace for outdoor living and entertaining. Inside, the house is divided into upper and lower levels. An upstairs hall, lined with skylights, leads to the essence of luxury living – a spacious kitchen, wine vault, dining room, lounge and library; and continues deeper into the home’s private living spaces – the master bedroom, dressing area, bathroom, an indoor swimming pool and a gym. A set of stairs leads you downstairs to the lower level, where you’ll find the games room, home theater, kids’ and guests bedrooms, and a service area. Every room features glass walls, tinted for privacy and aesthetic interest. Adding to the home’s futuristic appeal, this high-tech zen design is computerized, putting computerized lighting, safety, blinds and air conditioning controls at the owners’ fingertips. Located in Moskovskaya Oblast, Russia, this unusual raised home design took center stage and even picked up a number of awards along the way. Distinctive for their vibrant red color and beach home exteriors, these guest houses are compact, lightweight homes of wood, raised to adapt to the hillside. Minimalist interiors lead out to a simple but stunning semi-circular balcony – the home’s hotspot, according to Kuzembaev, “A man always wants to climb higher; after he has climbed, he wants to sit there; and when he has sat down, he would like to have a roof over his head.” These sheltered patios provide an unmatched vantage point for the unfolding view. But [...]]]> Architect Jaak Kangro of Nordicasa Design & Construction sent us some amazing photos of his latest architectural endeavor – a gorgeous timber home design located in the Valdelineares ski resort in Spain. Built almost entirely from 165 mm laminated pinewood, this wood clad house boasts a rustic mountain cottage feel both inside and out. But this mountain house isn't without its modern touches, like the tiny peek-a-boo window slots peppering the front facade, and a stone-finished front entrance flanked by windows that offers a small view of what’s inside. The rear face of the home features glass walls that open to the outdoors. Interiors are as wonderfully woody as the exterior, giving each room a country-chic feel. The open-concept main floor is conducive to socializing; you can sit in any area and still have a view of what’s cooking in the kitchen and the living room fireplace and the dining nook. Interestingly, the kitchen features a much-more modern aesthetic, temporarily straying from natural wood to be replaced by contemporary white cabinets, countertops and a horizontal window backsplash. A combination of two houses, this unusual house separates the living and [...]]]> Slovenian architecture firm Superform, known for their progressive architecture, furniture and interior design, has delivered on all these expectations (and then some!) with a progressive timber home design in the town of Ljubno ob Savinji, about 70 kilometers from Slovenia’s capital of Ljubljana. A combination of two houses, this unusual house separates the living and socializing areas in two very different buildings, each designed to respond to its specific purpose. Tending toward the more traditional side, a timber and stone structure is occupied by the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen in a massive, monolith of a house characterized by its private design; wood-clad with windows shuttered for privacy from the outdoors. The home’s social spaces can be found in its second, boat-like structure made of glass, steel, Rheinzink and wood. Here, the living room, dining room and a large hall invite the outdoors in through an expansive glass wall, sliding open to the patio overlooking the pool. Superform

This landmark building in Oslo by Snøhetta (Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, Tarald Lundevall, Craig Dykers) is the

largest cultural centre built in Norway in 700 years. The competion brief stated that the operahouse should be monumental in it’s expression. Snøhetta's interpretation of monumentality is a concept of togetherness, joint ownership, easy and open access for all which is manifested in the warping roof plane making the an extended piece of civic public space. Monumentality is achieved through wide horizontal extension and not verticality. Integral to the 1,000-room interior, which is largely lined with crafted woodwork (using the traditions of Norwegian boat builders), are a number of art commissions interwoven into the structural fabric, including a cloakroom, a collaboration with their 2007 Serpentine Pavilion collaborator Olafur Eliasson.

The rear view holds something of a surprise – a delight for the outdoor enthusiast and architecture lover alike. Featuring floor-to-ceiling glass and a large terrace overlooking a secluded, leafy backyard with a pool, this unusual home brings you the best of both worlds – indoor and out. Netherlands architecture firm Group A created a wonderful contrast to the surrounding 19th century villas in this contemporary, slanted-roof, angled-wall home. The front and rear gardens are connected by an underpass sloping beneath the house, offering access to the basement and a sheltered carport. The interior design is very much about the outdoors. A minimalist, unassuming decor keeps the focus on the windows and the views beyond. Group A

The most striking thing about this [...]]]> In underground home designs, this unusual house plan is the collaboration between the Netherlands architects at SeARCH and Christian Muller Architects. This underground home, located in the Swiss village of Vals, is set amidst a cluster of mountain houses and if you don’t look carefully you might miss it! The most striking thing about this stone house is the majestic Alpine view through a wide, elliptical opening in the hillside, revealing spacious outdoor entertaining areas that lead to the home’s main entrance. Another entrance from a nearby barn leads residents and guests through an underground pathway, providing an alternate entryway into the home. The circular opening in the mountainside allows for lots of windows, which flood interiors with natural light while framing the stunning mountain views. SeARCH and Christian Muller Architects

The wood clad house combines a natural appeal with industrial-chic elements, artfully blending a home [...]]]> Architects Lauren and Eric Wendlandt with Kansas City based Framework Design architecture firm are the brains behind this 6,500-sq.-ft. sustainable home that encompasses residential, commercial and workshop space in one. This Kansas City urban architecture has character, inside and out. The wood clad house combines a natural appeal with industrial-chic elements, artfully blending a home atmosphere with an inspired and equally inspiring workspace. The warm wood that gives this urban house its rustic style was salvaged from local barns and oak reclaimed from area remodels, giving this house design its distinctive flavor. Expansive windows create the feeling of being outdoors, which is enhanced by all the wood details. A contemporary staircase features floating steps and a railing made from a pipe, adding authentic loft-style flair to the space. This sustainable house has more to it than meets the eye, such as a rainwater recycling system, radiant flooring, tankless and solar water heaters, photovoltaics, recycled insulation and tiles, passive ventilation, thermal stone walls, natural lighting, dual- and low-flush toilets and shower heads, and a rooftop garden in the works. Among the grass and trees of this five-acre property, this wonderful wood clad house features an unusual floor plan with a hollow center, “as if the heart of the house had somehow fallen outside its body,” according to OBRA Architects. But that’s not to say this country home doesn’t have heart! A linear layout of living spaces leads you from one part of the home to the next, creating a sense of whole throughout the separate spaces. Adding interest to minimalist interiors, constantly shifting vanishing points create large openings in the roof for centrifugal views of the surrounding country. Inside, this unusual home’s shape creates atypical angles and architectural features that add an element of surprise around every corner. A minimalist loft area overlooks the main floor, further enhancing the already-striking sense of light and space. Beyond its unique architectural design, this eco house design also incorporates a number of sustainable technologies like geothermal heating, passive ventilation and natural lighting. OBRA Architects
