I was not-so-pleasantly surprised that AT&T yet again raped me by charging me extra for using my MSN IM and Yahoo IM for business... which is supposed to be covered in the $99 I pay every month for UNLIMITED DATA... not so... the douchebags at AT&T decided to go for the de rigeur practice of ripping off their loyal customers by charging each and every IM you get as a TEXT MESSAGE AND SMS, not included in your so called "UNLIMITED" plan.  So head over to http://www.Palringo.com -- it's sleek, efficient and a helluvalot better than the crap your blackberry comes with...

    And my all-time favorite kissing scene will always be the final scene of Cinema Paradiso, when the hero is older now.  He is seated in his personal movie theater (he's a famous director now) and his employer, Alfredo, from his boyhood years has passed away and left him a little present.  A film reel.  Upon watching it, he realizes it is the splicing together of all of the kissing scenes that the church made his little village theater cut out of all the films they showed through the decades.  At the end of the film, I just cry and cry.  This is the perfect valentines day movie.  Watch it with someone you love.  And keep the kleenex handy!

    As long as I can remember, I have always had my eyes open for something new to add to my collection. Usually the types of places I hunt for valuable finds are in flea markets and in old out of the way pawn shops, antique warehouses and used book stores.

    Most of the time I have my eyes peeled for “collectors items” in the investment range of about $25. I usually try to negotiate with the seller to see if I can get the item for less, and I rarely spend more than that unless it is for something really special. Ok, I admit it - I am more of a budget collector. I am mostly seeking that undiscovered gem of potential value that I might find in the back of some old boutique.

    The fact that I limit myself to a price range of $20 is not something that I specifically prefer, but more because of the fact that my current financial standing doesn’t really allow me to move much beyond the discount collector pieces.

    Do you sometimes wonder what it would feel like to purchase some really rare item that would truly add monetary value to your collection? It seems that for some people cost is just not an issue, and they actually made some pretty extravagant purchases in the year 2008, most of them turning out to be pretty expensive investments as well…

    1. 1961 Ferrari California Spyder Breaks Records with $10,894,900 Price Tag

    This amazing looking car was purchased for an equally amazing price at an auction in Maranello, Italy last year by buyer Chris Evans, a popular British radio host. The Ferrari, previously owned by actor James Coburn, was finally sold at almost twice the price that it had been estimated to sell at. It seems that some people are happily willing to pay top prices for quality.

    2. World’s Most Expensive License Plate Sold for $14.3 Million

    It turns out that there is quite a demand for certain license plate numbers, especially among those buyers who have the kind of funds that are necessary to make this kind of a purchase. This particular deal cost roughly $14.3 million and was made by UAE based businessman Saeed Abdul Ghafour Khouri who paid this record breaking sum for the respect of showing that he is really number 1 - with a Abu Dhabi license plate aptly labeled “1” purchased at an auction held at the 7-star Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi. I can’t help but wonder if the owner of the license plate and the Ferrari above shouldn’t just get together and combine their purchases to create one of the world’s highest priced car + license plate combinations ever… I wonder what the resell market price would be on an item like that?

    3. Rare Blue Diamond Sells for World Record Price of $8.9 Million

    We all know that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but it turns out that some girls have much more expensive taste in friends than other girls. The awesome blue diamond pictured above is a 13.39 carat beauty that sold for the record price of $8.9 million at a sale at Christie’s in Geneva last year. The diamond is considered quite rare and contains boron, giving it a slightly bluish color as well as giving it properties that make it a semi-conductor that conducts electricity. My grandfather would say that it had better do more than conduct some electricity - for that price you would expect at least bolts of lightning.

    4. 1909 Honus Wagner Baseball Card Sells for $1.62 Million

    You may think that this has got to be the record price paid for a baseball card. Actually no, the record price for a baseball card is really $2.8 million, which was paid in 2007 for another Wagner card. I guess this guy must have been a really good baseball player! I wonder how much his yearly salary was back in 1909…

    5. Rare 3 Cent Stamp Sells for Over $1 Million

    This 3-cent, rose-colored “B Grill” stamp is among only 4 examples of this valuable stamp known to be in existence. An anonymous buyer made this part of their personal collection when they secured the winning bid of $1,035,000. Nothing like purchasing a quality stamp for your collection.

    6. Russian Oligarch Pays Record Breaking $750 Million for Riviera Villa

    This mansion, built by King Leopold II of Belgium in 1902 was purchased in 2008 for a sum far above the going price, even for a luxurious villa on the French Riviera. Mikhail Prokhorov is said to have paid more than $750 million for Villa Leopolda, located between Nice and Monaco. Now this is the type of place where you can really entertain guests…

    7. Painting by Francis Bacon Breaks Record with Selling Price of Over $86 Million

    Triptych 1974-77 by Francis Bacon (1909-1992) sold for $86.3 Million in May last year making it the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction and the most valuable Contemporary work ever sold in Europe. If you have ever wondered how prices go so high for pieces like this, it turns out that some folks just seem to have more money for their “collection” budgets than many small countries.

    8. $2.1 Million Paid for Opportunity to Dine with Billionaire Warren Buffett

    In the most expensive charity auction ever held on eBay, a Chinese investment manager won the chance last year to have lunch with the billionaire Warren Buffett by bidding $2,110,100. Zhao Danyang of the Hong Kong-based Pureheart China Growth Investment Fund apparently has an investment philosophy that he says is similar to Buffett’s approach, basically one of finding companies with a competitive advantage that are selling for significantly less than what they are worth. I hope that this little dinner get together was worth the extraordinary price but I just have to wonder… Did he also have to pay the bill for the food as well?

    9. European Billionaire Commissions World’s Most Expensive Watch

    A $6.5 million watch was commissioned by a European billionaire for a one-of-a-kind timepiece made by Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin that will make it the world’s most expensive new watch. The timepiece, which could apparently take years to complete, is expected to include the following:

    * Perpetual calendar and leap year
    * Star chart and celestial annual calendar
    * Tourbillon regulator
    * Sunrise and sunset indication
    * Perpetual time equation
    * Phases and age of the moon
    * Substantial power reserve
    * Multiple time zones and day-night indication

    At least he got some special features designed into it. I have always wanted a watch with a star chart and celestial annual calendar. Lucky guy!

    10. Rare Marilyn Monroe Photographs Sell for $150,000

    A collection of 36 rare photographs thought to be the last professional images of the star Marilyn Monroe were sold last year for $150,000 at an auction in New York. The famous actress posed nude in this photo shoot for a 1962 issue of Vogue only six weeks before she died of an overdose. The pictures, taken by photographer Bert Stern, were eventually published in the magazine as a final memorial to the iconic actress.

    My wonderful incredibly  hot friend, Lesly Bernard, has opened a fabulous new haunt in the East Village called Mr. Jones.  I still have fond memories of Clementine where cocktails were as good as mine back when I was mixing at Marions.  I just got word that Mr. Jones has received the coveted New York Times review.  As if.

    Since I am bound, gagged and chained to my dungeon of an office, running Design Shrine Group and writing a second book - thus unable to have a life of any kind - I have not yet been.  But I plan to as soon as I can get my driveway shoveled, since we're again snowed in, and my toe steps onto the wondrous land of Manhattan, I shall avidly try the harami goma shichimi!

    But if you're lucky enough to live in the land of epicurean delights, please get thy foxiness over to Mr. Jones immediately and report back!

    Applause for Lesly Bernard. Failing to and La Otra this fall as planned, Mr. Bernard, the Tillman’s impresario, has managed to open this East Village yakitori lounge. Its
    name smacks of Amy Winehouse. The pop innuendo is abetted by drinks from the Angel’s Share bar book and a funked-up Danish modern interior, with big, round, red
    banquettes. “In the city, most people don’t have room to entertain their friends, so I really want to offer people a comfortable place for that,” Mr. Bernard said.

    Judging by the empty seats, folks are in no mood to party. Perhaps their hearts have been skewered like those in the chef Bryan Emperor’s hatsu in yakitori sauce. At $3, these tasty, if chewy, grilled chicken hearts are a seeming bargain. Still, you would have to gut the whole coop to make a meal. Other grilled meats are more satisfying. The harami goma shichimi’s hefty hunks of wagyu, topped with an opium-thick black sesame paste, deliver on designer-beef indulgence ($7).

    Despite their dominance on a menu of small bites, the yakitori aren’t the go-to items; too many taste of gas from the grill. Instead, trust in the Frialator.

    Lollipoplike chicken wings — partly boned, fried with potato starch and topped with daikon to offset their earthiness — are a comfort-food balm ($9). Kobe meatballs ($12) are rich enough with molten foie gras centers; frying them is overkill. But the mizuna salad benefits from a sprinkling of crunchy jako fish ($8). Calamari tempura ($8) is the chicken wings’ even trashier, more addictive companion. Slathered in a fermented soybean-and-chili paste that is mellowed and sweetened with cream, it’s a glam-rock sop for the cocktails.

    As for those cocktails, who can resist the old-fashioned? It hugs a single sphere of ice. A flock of citrus, peels curled like plumage, perches on its glass. It makes you laugh. Then it soothes you. What more to ask from a drink in troubled times.

    Let me cut to the chase. The biggest robbery in the history of this country is taking place as you read this. Though no guns are being used, 300 million hostages are being taken. Make no mistake about it: After stealing a half trillion dollars to line the pockets of their war-profiteering backers for the past five years, after lining the pockets of their fellow oilmen to the tune of over a hundred billion dollars in just the last two years, Bush and his cronies -- who must soon vacate the White House -- are looting the U.S. Treasury of every dollar they can grab. They are swiping as much of the silverware as they can on their way out the door.

    No matter what they say, no matter how many scare words they use, they are up to their old tricks of creating fear and confusion in order to make and keep themselves and the upper one percent filthy rich. Just read the first four paragraphs of the lead story in last Monday's New York Times ( http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/22/business/22lobby.html ) and you can see what the real deal is:

    "Even as policy makers worked on details of a $700 billion bailout of the financial industry, Wall Street began looking for ways to profit from it.

    "Financial firms were lobbying to have all manner of troubled investments covered, not just those related to mortgages.

    "At the same time, investment firms were jockeying to oversee all the assets that Treasury plans to take off the books of financial institutions, a role that could earn them hundreds of millions of dollars a year in fees.

    "Nobody wants to be left out of Treasury's proposal to buy up bad assets of financial institutions."

    Unbelievable. Wall Street and its backers created this mess and now they are going to clean up like bandits. Even Rudy Giuliani is lobbying for his firm to be hired (and paid) to "consult" in the bailout ( http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2008/09/25/2008-09-25_rudy_giulianis_crass_opportunism_reflect.html ).

    The problem is, nobody truly knows what this "collapse" is all about. Even Treasury Secretary Paulson admitted he doesn't know the exact amount that is needed (he just picked the $700 billion number out of his head!). The head of the congressional budget office said he can't figure it out nor can he explain it to anyone.

    And yet, they are screeching about how the end is near! Panic! Recession! The Great Depression! Y2K! Bird flu! Killer bees! We must pass the bailout bill today!! The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

    Falling for whom? NOTHING in this "bailout" package will lower the price of the gas you have to put in your car to get to work. NOTHING in this bill will protect you from losing your home. NOTHING in this bill will give you health insurance.

    Health insurance? Mike, why are you bringing this up? What's this got to do with the Wall Street collapse?

    It has everything to do with it. This so-called "collapse" was triggered by the massive defaulting and foreclosures going on with people's home mortgages. Do you know why so many Americans are losing their homes? To hear the Republicans describe it, it's because too many working class idiots were given mortgages that they really couldn't afford. Here's the truth: The number one cause of people declaring bankruptcy is because of medical bills ( http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/02/business/02insure.html ). Let me state this simply: If we had had universal health coverage, this mortgage "crisis" may never have happened.

    This bailout's mission is to protect the obscene amount of wealth that has been accumulated in the last eight years. It's to protect the top shareholders who own and control corporate America. It's to make sure their yachts and mansions and "way of life" go uninterrupted while the rest of America suffers and struggles to pay the bills. Let the rich suffer for once. Let them pay for the bailout. We are spending 400 million dollars a day on the war in Iraq. Let them end the war immediately and save us all another half-trillion dollars!

    I have to stop writing this and you have to stop reading it. They are staging a financial coup this morning in our country. They are hoping Congress will act fast before they stop to think, before we have a chance to stop them ourselves. So stop reading this and do something -- NOW! Here's what you can do immediately:

    1. Call ( http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/cgi-bin/newmemberbio.cgi?lang=&member=ILJR&site=ctc&address=&city=&state=IL&zipcode=&plusfour= ) or e-mail ( http://my.barackobama.com/page/s/contact2 ) Senator Obama. Tell him he does not need to be sitting there trying to help prop up Bush and Cheney and the mess they've made. Tell him we know he has the smarts to slow this thing down and figure out what's the best route to take. Tell him the rich have to pay for whatever help is offered. Use the leverage we have now to insist on a moratorium on home foreclosures, to insist on a move to universal health coverage, and tell him that we the people need to be in charge of the economic decisions that affect our lives, not the barons of Wall Street.

    2. Take to the streets. Participate in one of the hundreds of quickly-called demonstrations ( http://truemajority.wiredforchange.com/event/distributedEventCalendar.jsp ) that are taking place all over the country (especially those near Wall Street and DC).

    3. Call your Representative in Congress and your Senators. (click here to find their phone numbers: http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/ ). Tell them what you told Senator Obama.

    When you screw up in life, there is hell to pay. Each and every one of you reading this knows that basic lesson and has paid the consequences of your actions at some point. In this great democracy, we cannot let there be one set of rules for the vast majority of hard-working citizens, and another set of rules for the elite, who, when they screw up, are handed one more gift on a silver platter. No more! Not again!

    P.S. Having read further the details of this bailout bill, you need to know you are being lied to. They talk about how they will prevent golden parachutes. It says NOTHING about what these executives and fat cats will make in SALARY. According to Rep. Brad Sherman of California, these top managers will continue to receive million-dollar-a-month paychecks under this new bill. There is no direct ownership given to the American people for the money being handed over. Foreign banks and investors will be allowed to receive billion-dollar handouts. A large chunk of this $700 billion is going to be given directly to Chinese and Middle Eastern banks. There is NO guarantee of ever seeing that money again.

    P.P.S. From talking to people I know in DC, they say the reason so many Dems are behind this is because Wall Street this weekend put a gun to their heads and said either turn over the $700 billion or the first thing we'll start blowing up are the pension funds and 401(k)s of your middle class constituents. The Dems are scared they may make good on their threat. But this is not the time to back down or act like the typical Democrat we have witnessed for the last eight years. The Dems handed a stolen election over to Bush. The Dems gave Bush the votes he needed to invade a sovereign country. Once they took over Congress in 2007, they refused to pull the plug on the war. And now they have been cowered into being accomplices in the crime of the century. You have to call them now ( http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/ ) and say "NO!" If we let them do this, just imagine how hard it will be to get anything good done when President Obama is in the White House. THESE DEMOCRATS ARE ONLY AS STRONG AS THE BACKBONE WE GIVE THEM.     • The woman is anti-choice even in cases of rape and incest.
    • She does NOT believe that man had a hand in global warming (!!!).
    • She wants schools to teach creationism alongside evolution - basically doesn't believe in science.  We don't need another nutjob in the white house.
    • If you're gay, forget about it.  She just hates you.
    • She tried to ban books from her local library and then when she lost that fight, tried to get the librarian fired.
    • She is the queen of earmarks.
    • She lied when she said she was never for the "Bridge to Nowhere."
    • She did NOT sell the plane on Ebay as she likes to tell people every day.
    • She is in the middle of a scandal called "troopergate" that you can look up because it's too long to explain in a blog post but it's lame.
    • She is the QUEEN of abuse of power... she uses her job to get back at people and replaced everyone in the government mostly with inexperienced friends of hers from high-school.
    • She said she is very International and knows a thing or two about international affairs.  She even cited Ireland as a place she visited.  Actually, that's a LIE.  That trip was a fueling stop and she was there for an hour or so.  She never visited Ireland.  Hell, she only just got her passport!
    • She didn't know the Bush Doctrine during the Charles Gibson interview.
    • Her scandals goes on and on.  But her worst quality is that she is just plain STUPID.

    Getting back to McCain...  He lies so much in his ads and speeches that I wanted to post this video by Brave New Films.  It pretty much says it all.

    The point is that McCain is not the right leader for today when he agrees so much with Bush.  And what's worse is that he openly admits to knowing NOTHING about the economy.  Well, guess what folks... Alan Greenspan today said that this is the WORST economy that he's ever seen.  We are close to what happened in the 20s right before the Great Depression. The DOW lost over 500 points today!!!

    Remember Merrill Lynch?  No more.  AIG is about to crash.  Washington Mutual is no more.  Lehman Brothers is about to file for Bankruptcy.  You know why?  Because there are no more regulations on Wall Street thanks to Bush.  He basically says to do whatever you want to get rich (to the brokers) and let the little guy deal with it.  Isn't it time to admit "less government" interference has created a nightmare for everyone in this country.  Heck, even brokers are saying they need more regulations.

    Obama will raise taxes, yes.  BUT ONLY FOR THOSE EARNING OVER $250,000.  Not for the middle-class.  He wants to cease taxing seniors.  Her is for the middle-class people.  And if you vote McCain, then you DESERVE ANOTHER FOUR - EIGHT YEARS OF MC-BUSH.

    WAKE UP.  I only pray you will be researching before you cast your vote.  Enough is enough!
