The monograph has become a fairly predictable format for architecture books, varying, it seems, only in terms of how much content is presented and what the page looks like. Collecting photographs of finished buildings, renderings of unbuilt or soon-to-be-built projects, conventional architectural drawings, descriptive text, essays by admirers, and sometimes more, the clear goal of monographs is product, not process. Certain exceptions to this unwritten rule exist, most notably OMA/Rem Koolhaas's influential S,M,L,XL and later Content, but the effort and potential risks associated with undertaking such preclude more in their ilk, meaning the tried-and-true prevails. Many monographs do attempt different ways of arranging the content and/or expanding it to include process as well as product, but for a full understanding of why a particular design looks the way it does one is left yearning for more. Perhaps architects do not want to reveal too much, or they've moved beyond the buildings collected into a monograph. Whatever the reason, this "archicomic on architectural evolution" stands apart from other monographs to provide abundant insight into the working process of Denmark's Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG).

Arising from an exhibition at the Danish Architecture Centre, the book calls itself "a popular cultural manifesto" instead of a monograph. It structures the 35 projects more or less like your run-of-the-mill monograph -- each project is presented distinctly -- yet in comic book format. Bjarke Ingels is the constant presence, literally, from one project to the next, his visage pops up in unexpected places to describe some tidbit via comic speech balloons. One traditional format (monograph) is traded for another (comic) and the results make each project read like a narrative. The words, images and diagrams combine with the usual photos, drawings, models and renderings to explain each design from inception to occupation, or however far the project was taken. One sees consistency in the various projects, but more than a formal consistency. One sees the questioning of status quo responses, not out of "being different" but in an effort to improve upon the shortcomings of traditional typologies. The Mountain Dwelling project in Copenhagen is a good example of BIG's strategy of using given conditions (site, program) to generate designs beyond expectations. In this case all residential units are south-facing with a large outdoor space, suburbia transplanted to the city yet retaining the latter's density.

So is the "archicomic" something that will catch on with other architects? Surely there will be others like this, but one must acknowledge that it is the combination of words and images here that makes it work. It's not just a matter of adopting the comic format and the deal is done; the choice of words and images is important. BIG's evolutionary diagrams work extremely well with the comic format, in many cases telling enough of one portion of the story on their own. As well, the words floating in the speech bubbles and other boxes are more lighthearted than most writing on architecture, but nevertheless informative and intelligent. If other architects want to learn something from this book, they should be inspired by how BIG found something appropriate to the firm and their output. As Bjarke Ingels explains early in the book, they tried to convey the energy and life of the office and its projects, to make it personal and to tell the stories behind the designs. They succeeded and the reader is better off for it.

We've featured a few articles about MR+A's work in the past, from furniture to prefab, so I was pretty stoked to open the mailbox today and find a copy of Princeton Architectural Press' recent book, Marmol Radziner + Associates: Between Architecture and Construction. Published in July 2008, this book runs the gamut of MR+A's work. Beginning with the "Early Years", the book highlights some of the witty quotes placed on their office marquee then quickly jumps into many of their most well-known projects including the Kaufmann House restoration, the Harris Pool House, the TBWA/Chiat/Day offices in San Francisco, and the Glenncoe Residence.

In addition to the firm's commercial and residential work, there is also a section showcasing their furniture work and the design decisions that went into creating their Glenncoe furniture line.

Overall, this is a well designed book that truly captures the creativity and uniqueness of MR+A. Definitely give it a look the next time you're at your local bookseller.

Every issue gets better and better. You kill me.

I adore this sofa, and I am usually no fan of hippie dippy fabrics. HB can get any style right, that's all I am sayin'.

The current issue is all about getting "cozy" right. Who can't use an extra helping of cozy these days? I was happy to see slipcovered sofas in this issue. As you know, I am pro dogs-on-couch, so it as nice to see something washable in a magazine.

GARY CHANG stood in the middle of his apartment on a recent Saturday morning, ignoring a message from his Nintendo Wii on the wall-size screen: “Are you fidgeting? I can’t seem to analyze you.” He repositioned the game system’s balance board, stepped on for a second run of downhill skiing and began to shift from side to side, a computer-generated figure swishing in time with him across the room.

Soon enough, having worked up an appetite, he was ready to move on. He used a remote control to raise the screen, revealing a large yellow-tinted window behind it, filling the room with radiance. “Like sunshine,” Mr. Chang said, though the colorized gray daylight made the view — a forest of apartment towers in Hong Kong’s bustling working-class Sai Wan Ho district — look dusky, like an old sepia print.

He grabbed a handle near the wall-mounted television, pulling a section of the wall itself toward the center of the room. Behind it, a small countertop with two burners, a sink and a spice rack appeared. Gerd Arntz was commissioned by Otto Neurath to develop the Isotype visual dictionary, consisting of over 4000 symbols. According to his website, "The idea was to create a series of iconic images that can bridge between languages, are easy to grasp and, when done well, also nice to look at." Gerd lived in communist Germany and Russia, so it's interesting to see how that played into his icons.

PLAZA mag, a swedish glossy get-together of interiors, design and fashion. Not ad-less, but you get into the features & editorials fairly quickly, with fashion interludes here and there. Woman in design is the general theme for this issue, which features many well illustrated articles. I enjoyed the interview with Ilse Crawford, Elle Decor's interior design director, on the quality of life, how design sometimes threads it all together for her. She aptly reminds that "above all, a room should feel comfortable", something often forgotten in the field. There's also an article on Dutch food designer Marije Vogelzang (you may remember May issue of ICON, she made the cover) in using food as a materiel to design unique (and tasty) experiences. Modest and inspiring, a sure stop next time I'm in Amsterdam. As for the insipid cover, do not let it deceive you, the content is fairly fined-tuned. A nice ride.

I didn't intend to make this a girl-themed mag post, it just happened. THEME explores the topic as well with their unique and acute "global asian culture" glasses. An interview with the NY based Smart design gals about Femme Den, an in-house consultancy with insight and design methodologies that link product design and female consumers; Design that is sensible and based on realities not assumptions (eg: womanized in pink). And if you're a fan of Nokia's research captain Jan Chipchase, you'll love reading about the sensible and talented globetrotter and fellow researcher Youngee Jung. She's touring the world, discovering new people in new places, studying how different culture, users, needs and technology meet and how this shapes mobile phone concepts of tomorrow.

If Frame is a regular pick of yours, then MARK should be too. Thick and heavy, it boast an insightful and singular curation of architectural works and topics 6 times per year. The october/november issue is a lot less towers and lot more contemporary houses--seven in total--set in Japan, Mongolia, Mexico and Poland. My favorite made the cover and is the less fanciful and garnished of the lot: a wooden country house tucked away by the Kuma river in Kumamura, Japan. The house is an assemblage of 11 layers (read 11 distinctive floor plans) of huge wooden square logs cleverly piled as to form cave-like spaces and to which the surfaces are or can be shelves, staircase, and seating at the same time.

In the September 15 issue of New York Magazine, Justin Davidson admirably tackles the building boom of the last 15 years, looking at how buildings have transformed their immediate context. "The Glass Stampede" is a lengthy article (one I've yet to tackle, so I can't comment at length on the text here) with 52 before-and-after views of notable and not-so-notable buildings in Manhattan.

This is a case of the print version being more valuable than the online one, as the latter spreads the article across 23 pages, making comparisons of the various conditions rather difficult. I hope to post on this article again soon -- one I appreciate for its breadth and its all-in-one-place format -- once I've had a chance to read Davidson's words.
