Google to Buy Web Video Provider Brightcove? [RUMOR]

Visit Mashable!

brightcoveFresh off the news that Google is buying reCAPTCHA, another major acquisition rumor has emerged. According to a tweet from Mark Glaser, Executive Editor of PBS MediaShift, “Brightcove in talks with Google about buyout in $500m to $700m range.”

Brightcove, for those unfamiliar, is essentially the YouTube of b2b video, powering video streaming on massive sites like AOL, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Such a deal would give Google significantly more reach in online video, where YouTube is already far and away the most popular service.

Unlike YouTube, however, Brightcove is already profitable and on pace to do $80 million in sales this year according to BusinessInsider. While there aren’t any further details available yet on the negotiations, today’s news follows comments made by Google CEO Eric Schmidt earlier this month that his company was “seriously looking at acquisitions again.”
