The winners of the Tenth Annual RBC Painting Competition were announced on September 25, so it was high time Art MoCo took a closer look. The awards are certainly generous: the national winner receives $25,000, the 2 honourable mentions $15, 000 each and the remaining 12 semi-finalists $7,500.
Jeremy Hof walked away as the national winner for his acrylic and plaster piece entitled layer painting red, a carefully constructed work that revealed many layers of colour.
The title of honourable mention Wil Murray's entry attracted a lot of attention: Sexe Maniac Maniac Maniac Maniac Maniac, but it was the exuberance of colour and form that kept it.
Jeanie Riddle's composition was so bold it seemed to throb. It was difficult not to be drawn right into that black shape.
Amanda Reeves was the other artist of honourable mention, and the delicate nuances in the colours of her work were thoroughly captivating.
If an artist like semi-finalist Lorenzo Pepito considers athletic shoes as art, then it comes as no surprise that he should be struck by the minimalist value of the shoeboxes.
