I love this NYT article on Al Jaffee's fold-ins for Mad Magazine, as a kid, it was always my favorite part of the magazine. It's a unique, fun, interactive element, but also has a political point of view ~ thereby becoming one of those things that is appealing to kids and adults alike. I'm mesmerized, not only by the daring political statements, but by the design - even the fine print at the bottom folds into a new paragraph. Totally memorable.
The above image is from Sept 1965, questioning the rise of modern art. The fine print on the folded image reads: "Empty frame is big improvement." Here are some more samples, since 2003 (the technique has been used on almost every back cover since 1964).
