No Look Too Expensive to Knock Off
The 2008 Kips Bay Decorator Show House, open through May 22, is a good source of inspiration, even for those on a modest budget. Although most of the designers used expensive materials and accessories, an enterprising shopper could adapt many of the looks for a reasonable price.
Some decorators juxtaposed unexpected styles and materials, pairing a 1960s modern chair with a traditional ottoman, for example, or upholstering a 19th-century French armchair in African cloth. One way to adapt this idea is to combine pieces you already own but never thought of using together, or to forage through thrift shops and yard sales for items from different eras instead of shopping for new ones.
