PlantTherapy: Saturday Morning Flowers
Article or RSS item submitted by Ty Wenzel • Mar 24th, 2008 • Category: Interiors Exteriors | 27 views
Last week I bought double tulips, which come from a local grower, and the florist suggested a few poppies to go with them. They had chosen from the suppliers all of these light, citrus colors that combined to create a great spring feeling.

Although the poppies became enormous flat discs once open, these tulips surprised me in their ability to match the poppies’ stride. They were stout flowers, but they grew another inch over the week and, because they age beautifully, lasted a long time in the vase. As the days passed the petals mellowed in color and became more translucent and tissue-like, as did these incredible poppies.
The fullest of the double tulips are called Double Late Flowering Peony Tulips. As their name suggests, they resemble a peony when open.
They can be found in many varieties right now at NYC florists. You also may find them at Jack’s Flowers at the Union Square Greenmarket on Saturdays. And if you want to see more pictures, visit the Van Bourgondien website - although they are sold out until the new fall orders are available.
