Writers Strike to Increase DVD Sales

It has been a long 9 weeks and 2 days since the Writers Guild of America began their strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. More than 12,000 writers have joined the strike, and countless television celebrities, such as members of the cast of Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, 24, and The Office, have rallied outside California studios to support their writers.
A survey of the American public conducted by Pepperdine University on November 8, 2007 found that 4 out of 5 people are aware the writer’s strike is in progress. However, do you know the issues surrounding the strike? The Writers Guild negotiates a new basic contract with the AMPTP every three years, and this time they could not reach an agreement regarding key issues. These issues include DVD residuals, union jurisdiction over animation and reality program writers, and compensation for material written for the Internet and other up-and-coming digital technologies.
The writers strike in 1988 caused an estimated loss of 10% of television viewers. So with reruns and reality shows taking over the tube in 2008, American viewers, again, may be less likely to tune in to their favorite TV series. However, while the television networks are airing lemons, DVD distributors are making lemonade.
DVD sales are expected to escalate as more viewers search for alternative sources of entertainment. Many people are buying TV series DVDs and using this opening to catch up on past seasons they’ve missed. This time is also allowing Americans to wa
