In February, Chicago’s downtown Millennium Park was home to Canadian artist Gordon Halloran’s U.S. debut of his work Paintings Below Zero. This colorful ice creation measured 95 feet long and almost 12 feet high – making it Halloran’s largest frozen modern art installation thus far. One side of the ice wall, visible from Michigan Avenue, was inspired by Chicago’s skyline, while the other side was a geometric quilt of bright colors and complex designs meant to be seen up close.

“As Canadians, we have a personal and collective experience with ice and cold which is unique: we take pride in the beauty of our landscape and at the same time make peace with its harshness. We stare down into a sheet of frozen ice and see ourselves reflected clearly in a mirror the size of the sky.” –Gordon Halloran describing the origin of The Ice Painting.Paintings Below Zero

“Inspired by a glacial wall in its final stages of movement toward the ocean, the installation will evolve over time with natural and planned changes, encouraging visitors to return frequently to observe the activity.” -from the About the Exhibition page of the Museum of Modern Ice.Paintings Below Zero

Over 112,000 people came out in the sub-zero winter temperatures to view the ice painting, take photographs, and admire the artist’s work. “It’s like candy. You want to break off a piece and snack on it,” said one enthusiast.Paintings Below ZeroPaintings Below ZeroPaintings Below Zero The blog Paintings Below Zero at Millennium Park chronicles the creation process of this unique and modern masterpiece.
