Phillips de Pury Presents: The Tastemakers

When it comes to art, it’s hard to know what you like or maybe just why you like it. To prove that it has everything to do with personal preference Phillips de Pury & Co., in conjunction with their Saturday@Phillips event, chose 3 people they respect in the design/art industry and asked them to pick their favorite pieces from this weekend’s auction.
It’s always nice to get the inside scoop on someone’s connection to a piece of art. Tony Chambers, Editor-in-Chief of Wallpaper, for example is a hoarder so he has lots of stories to tell.
He loves to collect typographic ephemera, art, Danish furniture by Jens Risom and graphic monographs by Josef Muller-Brockman.
Some of Tony’s picks for Saturday’s sale include Gio Ponti’s set of 12 ‘Leggera’ chairs…”This chair by Gio Ponti has such elegant proportions - so light, physically and so light on the eye.”
Tony also likes Andy Warhol’s Joseph Beuys in Memoriam because “Warhol and Beuys together in one print! You’ve got to love a ‘two for one’.”
Phillips de Pury & Co. invited Suzy Hoodless, one of London’s leading interior designers to fall in love with 10 items up for auction this Saturday.
Suzy’s approach to design is sophisticated color mixed with idiosyncratic materials and furniture styles. She has no rules when it comes to collecting. “I acquire and integrate pieces I like. And my real weakness is vintage textiles…and cookbooks.”
Suzy loves Cherner’s Two Cherner armchairs and two ‘Cherner’ side chairs because “it’s still one of the best chairs around and one of the most dramatic designs using moulded plywood.
The armchair version is an iconic design, the arms wrap around the chair like a human’s arms, welcoming and sculptural.”
Suzy likes Rachel Whiteread’s Herringbone Floor because its “intricate laser cut relief has a naive, simplistic quality that appeals to me.”
Ben Elliot, co-founder of Quintessentially–a global luxury lifestyly group collects art because “…I believe in living with art. It won’t change the world, but it can make a difference to the way you live and think.
But only if you are willing to engage in it. At the very best, you can own an object or a work that inspires you every day.”
Ben is a big fan of some of the photographs in the Saturday@Phillips auction.
He loves Herb Ritts’ William S. Burroughs with Glasses: “What a great photo–a portrait of the strange head of William Burroughs. It’s so hard to capture the spirit of someone on a photo but this is quirky and right on the money.”
Bert Stern’s The Last Sitting also grabbed Ben’s attention “…well just because of Marilyn–to have an iconic image of her would be pretty cool. And the fact that it’s the last sitting gives the work a real touch of atmosphere.”
This weekend’s auction is being held in Phillips de Pury & Co.’s new London showroom on March 15th. If you don’t plan to be on the other side of the Atlantic in two weeks, Phillips de Pury has made it easy to participate via their live online auction site. You’ll need to register first to bid.
